Firs Estate Allotment Holders Association, Dean Street, Derby
We have 52 plots on 6.5 acres of land. We are in a sheltered position on a south-facing slope with good loamy soil. We like to think it is an attractive site, with hedges bordering the grass tracks connecting the plots, numerous trees and an area set aside for wildlife. This is a private site (as opposed to those run by a local authority) and is leased to us by the owners. It is managed by a committee which is elected on a yearly basis at the annual general meeting of association members. The committee deals with looking after the site, letting plots, collecting rent and running the trading hut. There is also a seed scheme through which members can obtain seeds at a much reduced price. We are only too happy to hear from people who would like to rent a plot, for details see the next page. We would like to acknowledge the support we receive from the probation service's community payback team.
